ICE cream socialAt the beginning of the academic year, we come together as a department to meet the incoming first year students and get excited for the start of the semester!
First-year mentoring programEach first-year WiC member is paired with a senior graduate student who will serve as her mentor. The first year of graduate school is always challenging, and this program is designed to make the transition easier for our newest WiC members.
Book ClubEvery semester we vote on a different book to read and have monthly meetings where students, postdocs, and faculty can come together to discuss literature.
Research and seminar meetingsWe organize regularly scheduled research presentations by USC graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars in chemistry and its related fields, as well as arrange WiC meetings with visiting female seminar speakers.
Destress and Social EventsThroughout the year, we organize a variety of activities to take a break from the daily grind and socialize with our peers! These include pumpkin painting near Halloween, coffee breaks (see below), beach trips, hiking, socials at The Lab. Have an idea for a fun activity? Let us know!
Coffee and Chemists with Mike and MeganCo-hosted by Professors Michael Inkpen and Megan Fieser (our Faculty Mentor), Coffee and Chemists with Mike and Megan is an informal discussion group focused on addressing the stresses connected with graduate school. Topics vary widely, including strategies to improve networking, communication with your advisor, being productive, and addressing challenges with mental health.
A PH.D. state of mindWiC and CGSO have joined to organize this event which is in its second edition! With talks from invited counselors and clinical psychologists, Q&A, and moderated discussions, this event is a platform to discuss the stress and anxiety that graduate students experience throughout their PhD journey.
